Mark and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary on May 2. We had a wedding and a baby shower that weekend so it wasn't possible to go away overnight or really do anything too fun. Not that weddings and baby shower's aren't fun. In March, Mark had come across a deal in the GR Press for a discount at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Since it is normally out of our price range, we figured we had to snatch it up. We drove to Traverse City on Monday night and stayed with Mark's parents and then drove the rest of the way on Tuesday morning.
Tuesday was a icky day. Cold and Windy. The ride across the lake was pretty bumpy but kind of an adventure. We explored the island and then made our way to the hotel. Mackinaw is kind a different land. Because there are only a few motorized vehicles it's very quiet and peaceful. The hotel was great. A step back in time. We had a great room with a view of the water. I was really afraid we would have a view of a brick wall. Dinner is a very formal affair at the hotel. After 6 pm, men and women need to be dressed up . . . jacket and tie for men and dress or pants suit for women. Mark and I don't dress up much so it was kind of fun. For those than don't know, Mark is a meat and potato kind of guy. So dinner was a little crazy for him . . .for example, one option was Fresh Ahi Tuna Poke with Seaweed Salad. Not exactly his cup of tea. I had some amazing Whitefish for dinner. Yummy.
Wednesday was beautiful . Sunny and warmer. Mark let me sleep in awhile and then we explored the island a little more. We went to the hotel stables. We happen to be there in time to see the owners personal carriage hooked up. The horses we beautiful. I guess they only get used about an hour a day and are treated very well. What a life. Then it was time to head home. A short trip but very relaxing. Exactly was was called for after the last few months.
